        The number of older people using the Internet is rising rapidly, according to new Swedish research. In 2007, an average of just 29% of Swedes in the 65-79 age group used the Internet on an average day; by 2008, this figure had shot up to 39%, making Swedish pensioners among the most internet savvy in Europe.

        Many campaigns by EU governments to encourage people to eat more healthily have been carried out in the past decades with varying degrees of success or failure. Now, a new EUR 2.5 million EU-funded project led by the UK's University of Reading is cataloguing these campaigns to see which were successful and which were not and for what reasons.

        2009-06-02 - Scientists link potassium flow with schizophrenia

        An international team of scientists has identified a variant of a potassium channel that affects patients with schizophrenia. The results, published in the journal Nature Medicine, show how the expression of a formerly unknown form of a potassium channel is 2.5 times greater than normal in the brain memory hub of people suffering from this psychotic disorder, and is connected to a hotspot of genetic variation. Their findings could offer a new therapeutic target to combat schizophrenia.

        2009-06-03 - CAREPNEUMO aims to control antibiotic resistant diseases

        Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) triggers health problems for people worldwide. Key contributing factors are antibiotic resistance among pneumococcal strains that keep intensifying and existing vaccines, though effective, can lead to serotype replacement (i.e. when we eliminate bacteria with a vaccine, we 'force' the emergence of other bacteria). For a team of EU-funded researchers, novel intervention strategies are needed to fight antibiotic resistant S. pneumoniae. With almost EUR 3 million in funding, the CAREPNEUMO project is determined to deliver results.

        Researchers in Italy have gained new insights into the so-called 'shock-and-kill' strategy, whereby latent HIV genes can be 'smoked out' of human cells. The results represent a significant step forward for researchers examining ways to eradicate HIV-1.

        2009-06-06 - International researchers tackle stillbirth taboo

        Every year there are more than 3 million stillbirths. Yet despite advances and, at times, information overload in the medical world, stillbirths remain underreported and are either not found in data records or not recognised in national policymaking, which suggests that stillbirths are a taboo subject. In a supplement of the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, researchers from around the globe examined the problem in an attempt to improve knowledge and help put a stop to the problem.

        2009-06-10 - Discovery of mycobacteria spore formation sheds light on tuberculosis

        Scientists in Sweden have discovered that a type of mycobacteria, the genus responsible for causing tuberculosis, leprosy and Buruli ulcer, owes its success in part to its ability to form spores during its latent state. The findings, reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, have major implications for the prevention of these serious diseases.

        Proteins are the building blocks of life. They also play the starring role in many cellular processes. However, those complicated processes for the most part are directed by a number of proteins interacting within protein complexes. A new method for multiprotein complex production, developed by scientists funded in part by the EU, might now help facilitate the study of these important but elusive complexes. The new method could open up avenues for the discovery of drug targets, making it the focus of interest for the pharmaceutical industry.

        2009-06-16 - EU-funded study shows that cannabis can damage DNA

        Researchers in the UK have found evidence that smoking cannabis can damage human DNA in ways that could potentially increase the risk of developing cancer. The findings, published in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, are an outcome of the ECNIS ('Environmental cancer risk, nutrition and individual susceptibility') Network of Excellence, which was funded with EUR 11 million under the 'Food Quality and Safety' Thematic area of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to study how diet and hereditary factors can influence environmental cancer risk.

        Scientists in the UK and Switzerland have identified a signalling pathway, PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase) that shows promise as a target for treating aggressive skin cancer.         Researchers are aware that people prefer to listen with their right ear rather than their left. But their conclusions have always been based on controlled studies in laboratories, not in natural settings. Enter an Italian team of EU-funded researchers who conducted three studies on human ear preference observed during social interactions in noisy surroundings. Their findings are published in Springer's journal Naturwissenschaften.

        2009-06-25 - Happiness hormone crucial for mouse survival, EU-funded research finds

        EU-funded researchers in Germany have found that mice without serotonin (commonly known as the 'happiness hormone') in their brains have impaired growth, disturbed sleep, reduced breathing and heart rate, as well as a tendency to fight with other mice and eat their young. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provides new insights into the importance of the serotonin system.

        2009-06-29 - Experts call for antibiotic prescribing practices to be standardised across Europe

        EU-funded researchers have identified wide variations in the way antibiotics are prescribed across Europe. In some countries, just 20% of patients who go to their doctor with a cough are give antibiotics, while in other countries this figure is close to 90%. Furthermore, results from the study showed that taking antibiotics appeared to have little effect on patients' recovery times.

        UK scientists have shown that wildlife conservation areas are crucial to saving species of birds affected by climate change in Africa. Their findings, published in the journal Ecology Letters, reveal that designated wildlife areas are an effective tool to help biodiversity survive the fundamental changes taking place on the planet, and indicate a need for greater emphasis on ecosystem protection.

        2009-06-08 - World Oceans Day: healthy oceans key to Europe's future

        On World Oceans Day the European Commission recalls the vital role seas and oceans play for Europe. A healthy marine environment is essential to the health of our planet as seas and oceans are important regulators of the climate and are significant reservoirs of biodiversity. The EU is committed to the wise stewardship of seas and oceans, an objective which is at the heart of the EU's 2008 Marine Strategy Directive. The directive contains measures designed to protect and preserve the marine environment with the aim of ensuring that all EU marine waters become environmentally healthy by 2021. World Oceans Day is an initiative of the United Nations and has been celebrated since 1992.

        Does the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest increase the well-being of people living in the region? New international research shows that while it flourishes at first, a decline follows; this pattern is called 'boom and bust'. Funded in part by the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), the study indicates that the pre- and post-frontier levels of human development are similarly low.

        2009-06-25 - HighNoon project tackles global water cycle dilemma

        The HighNoon project, a collaboration between the EU and India, has got off the ground. Its primary objective is to evaluate the impact of the retreat of Himalayan glaciers and potential changes in the Indian summer monsoon on the distribution of water resources in northern India. Supported with EUR 3 million in funding, HighNoon is also seeking to provide recommendations for appropriate and effective response strategies to adapt to 'hydrological extreme events through a participatory process'.

        2009-06-04 - EU project treats agro waste for biogas

        The large amount of agricultural waste generated in the EU each year is a headache for farmers, who are obliged to get rid of it. The treatments they use tend to be cheap but inadequate. An alternative treatment is the use of biogas via anaerobic digestion (using microorganisms to break down the material in the absence of oxygen). The biogas treatment effectively fuels energy and nutrient recovery, with the added bonus of preventing pollution.

        2009-06-09 - OECD sets out opportunities and challenges for future bioeconomy

        By 2030, biotechnology could contribute up to 2.7% of gross domestic product (GDP) in industrialised countries and even more in developing countries, according to a new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For comparison, biotechnology currently contributes less than 1% to GDP in OECD countries.

        The innate immune system is a person's, animal's or plant's first line of defence against invading organisms. Dutch researchers have discovered a protein component that regulates this system. The study also highlights changes in this regulating mechanism that can trigger disruptions in human and plant immune systems. The findings, published in the journal Science, will help raise awareness of human autoimmune disorders and also fuel the development of safer, more disease-resistant foods.

        The BLOOM-NET project has received just over EUR 1.3 million in funding support for research into flowering plants. The ability to determine when a plant flowers can be of enormous benefit to the planet's food production, since much of what we consume (from the feed given to livestock to products bought off the supermarket shelf) originates in some form from flowering plants.

        2009-06-25 - Study shows the Mediterranean diet does the body good

        New research shows that a number of food groups in the Mediterranean diet play a much more significant role than others in improving people's well-being and helping them live longer. According to the study, the recipe for success is to eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and olive oil. The prospective cohort study, published in the British Medical Journal, was funded in part by the EU's 'Europe against Cancer' programme.

        2009-06-11 - EU project WATCH(es)-OVER people in transit

        EU-funded researchers have taken road safety one step further by developing a system that keeps an eye on vulnerable road users. The WATCH-OVER ('Vehicle-to-vulnerable road user cooperative communication and sensing technologies to improve transport safety') project, backed with EUR 3.32 million in funding under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), developed the technology in two versions: pre-crash system and warning system.

        2009-06-23 - Stronger EU-US research activity on the cards

        Differences exist between the research cultures of the EU and the US, an expert study has shown. The European Conference of Transport Research Institutes (ECTRI) and the Transportation Research Board (TRB) assessed how these differences can be used to drive new innovations in joint research projects. The EU and US transport research coordinating bodies studied the role of research in relation to the transport market and advances in the sector.

        European car manufacturers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and technology centres have teamed up to find a way to make more efficient and cost-effective automobile structure components. Under the EU-funded PROFORM ('An innovative manufacture process concept for a flexible and cost effective production of the vehicle body in white: Profile Forming') project, the consortium is developing a new technology that will speed up the production of components of different shapes while lowering the associated costs.

        Scientists in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland have successfully measured the charge states of individual gold and silver atoms using an innovative approach to atomic force microscopy (AFM). Their findings, reported in the journal Science, are important for the study of technologically important processes in physics and chemistry, and have implications for the development of single-electron devices.

        2009-06-08 - Dim, hydrogen-poor supernova may help solve gamma-ray mystery

        An international team of scientists has determined that a supernova called SN 2008ha, first observed in November 2008, is a faint, hydrogen-poor supernova. Their discovery, funded in part by the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), could link these events to a group of cosmic gamma-ray bursts, providing valuable insights into a long-standing mystery. The study is published in the journal Nature.

        2009-06-08 - Sunrise in Sweden: solar observatory launched in helium balloon

        On 8 June, the solar observatory Sunrise was launched from the Esrange Space Centre in Kiruna, Sweden. A gigantic helium balloon, carrying approximately 1 million cubic metres of gas, is now carrying the largest solar telescope ever to lift off from the Earth's surface. The observatory will circle the North Pole, where the Sun never sets in summer. There, it is expected to gather highly accurate information about the magnetic fields of the Sun's atmosphere.

        Researchers worldwide are working to keep Earth's technologies safe from the threat of space weather. The latest researchers to join this effort are from the University of Leicester in the UK who have implemented a 'double pulse' radar-operating mode on two radars that are part of SuperDARN (Super Dual Auroral Radar Network), the international radar network for assessing the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Earth.

        2009-06-03 - Renewable energy will boost economy and create jobs, study finds

        A study on the impacts of supporting renewable energy sources (RES) on the EU's economy has shown that increased support for RES will have a positive effect on the economy and will create a significant number of jobs. The study, carried out on behalf of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy and Transport, is the first to assess the economic effects of supporting RES in detail.

        2009-06-15 - EU's Research Executive Agency becomes autonomous

        On 15 June, the Research Executive Agency (REA) was officially granted its administrative and operational autonomy by the European Commission. The REA is located in Brussels, Belgium, and will become the biggest of the 6 existing EU executive agencies with a planned staff of 558 by 2013. It will control a EUR 6.5 billion budget, which represents around 12% of the budget for the current EU Framework Programme for Research (FP7). Although FP7 runs until 2013, the REA is expected to remain in place until 2017 in order to manage projects funded during FP7.

        2009-06-15 - SESAR commits EUR 1.9 billion to modernising Europe's air-traffic management

        On 12 June the SESAR ('Single European sky air-traffic management research') joint undertaking, founded by the European Commission and Eurocontrol, the European organisation for the safety of air navigation, signed agreements committing EUR 1.9 billion to research efforts that will help to alleviate air traffic congestion in European skies. Commission support is shared between the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA).

        2009-06-26 - Sustainable Nuclear Energy technology platform presents research strategy

        The European nuclear fission research community has finalised their Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which was presented at the FISA 2009 conference held in Prague, the Czech Republic from 22 to 24 June. The agenda was made available a few days before an independent review of European competence in nuclear fission research was presented by the Consultative Committee Euratom - Fission (CCE-FI) and the Environment Council adopted the Nuclear Safety Directive, which represents the first binding EU legislation on nuclear safety for all EU Member States.

    2009-06-10 - European Commission launches Strategy to boost development of Baltic Sea Region

    The European Commission presents its proposal for an EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region today. Five years on from enlargement, the region is facing pressing challenges including the deteriorating state of the Baltic Sea, poor transport links, barriers to trade and energy supply concerns. These problems have been exacerbated by a lack of effective coordination. The Strategy, presented by Danuta Hübner, Commissioner for Regional Policy, above all aims to maximise the development potential of the Member States and regions in the Baltic Sea area, which is home to nearly 100 million people.

    2009-06-12 - Commission consults on regulatory strategy to promote very high speed Internet

    The European Commission has launched a public consultation on its revised proposals for the regulation of Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband networks, in the form of a draft Commission Recommendation. A previous public consultation held during the last quarter of 2008 confirmed general support for the objective of the Commission to achieve a common regulatory framework for NGA in order to foster timely investment in very high speed networks while ensuring that the competitive structure of the market is maintained. In the light of comments from stakeholders, the revised draft Recommendation includes mechanisms to allocate the investment risk between investors and operators seeking access to NGA networks. The draft Recommendation forms part of the European Broadband Strategy that the March European Council invited the Commission to develop by the end of 2009. The public consultation will be open until 24 July 2009. The Commission plans to adopt the Recommendation, taking account of comments received, before the end of 2009.

    2009-06-18 - European Commission calls for an open, independent and accountable governance of the internet

    The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, today called, in a strategic document, for more transparency and multilateral accountability in the governance of the internet. There are today 1.5 billion internet users worldwide, 300 million of which are in the European Union's 27 Member States. At present, a private US-based body, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (  ICANN ), is responsible for coordinating key elements of the internet. The Commission agrees that private companies should continue to take the lead in the day-to-day management of the operation of the internet, as long as they are accountable and independent. The Commission also believes that decisions about the internet, especially those about openness and security, should be taken in a transparent and accountable manner because they affect everyone around the globe. ICANN currently operates under a Joint Project Agreement with the US Department of Commerce which expires on 30 September 2009. In the view of the European Commission, future internet governance arrangements should reflect the key role that the global network has come to play for all countries.

    2009-06-18 - When your yogurt pots start talking to you: Europe prepares for the internet revolution

    The internet is evolving rapidly: while 25 years ago it was connecting only about a thousand users, today it links around 1.5 billion people across the world. An average European has now at least one object that is connected to the internet, be it a computer or mobile phone. But the number of connected devices that are hardly visible, more complex and more mobile around us will multiply a hundred or even a thousand times over the next 5 to 15 years. The European Commission today announced actions to make sure that Europe can play a leading role in shaping these new networks of interconnected objects from books to cars, from electrical appliances to food – in short the emerging 'internet of things'. The EU's Action Plan presented today will help Europeans benefit from this evolution and at the same time address the challenges it raises such as privacy, security and the protection of personal data.

    2009-06-22 - €2.7 million from European Globalisation Fund to help some 600 redundant car sector workers in Spain

    The European Commission today made a payment of €2.7 million from the European Globalisation adjustment Fund (EGF) to Spain. The money will help some 600 workers made redundant as a direct result of production in the automotive sector being shifted to countries outside the EU (Morocco, Turkey and Taiwan), increased imports of cars and their components into the EU and reduced EU market share in production of motor vehicles.

    2009-06-04 - Emissions trading: public consultation on future EU ETS auctioning rules launched

    A public consultation on rules to govern the future auctioning of emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has been launched by consultants working for the European Commission. The consultation forms part of the Commission's preparation of a Regulation on auctioning of allowances with respect to the third and later trading periods. In accordance with the revision of the Emissions Trading Directive agreed as part of the EU climate and energy package in December last year, the Commission has to adopt a Regulation by 30 June 2010 to ensure that auctioning is conducted in an open, transparent, harmonised and non-discriminatory manner.

    2009-06-11 - Bathing water quality improving in the EU

    The annual bathing water report presented today by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency reveals that the large majority of bathing sites across the European Union met EU hygiene standards in 2008. During that bathing season some 96% of coastal bathing areas and 92% of bathing sites in rivers and lakes complied with minimum standards. The report provides useful water quality information for the millions of people who visit Europe's beaches every summer.

    2009-06-12 - Commission proposes to improve the safety of biocides and to simplify authorisation procedures

    The European Commission has today presented draft legislation to achieve a higher level of protection of health and environment. This proposal aims at significantly increasing the safety of biocide products used and placed on the market in the European Union. It proposes to phase out the most hazardous substances, particularly those that may cause cancer, and to introduce new rules for articles such as furniture and textiles treated with biocides, which are not covered by existing legislation. It introduces simplified legislation, whilst providing new incentives for companies to develop safer products against harmful pests and germs. . The Helsinki-based European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will be involved in the authorisation of some of these products through a centralised approach. The proposal should enter into force in 2013.

    2009-06-19 - Green Week 2009: Climate change – act and adapt

    With a new international climate agreement due to be finalised at the Copenhagen conference in December, climate change is the natural focus for the European Commission's Green Week 2009 conference taking place from 23 to 26 June at the Charlemagne Building in Brussels. Under the slogan 'act and adapt', Green Week, the biggest annual conference devoted to European environment policy, will examine the multi-faceted challenges of reducing EU and global greenhouse gas emissions and of adapting to the climate change that is already under way. Eight of the sessions will also try to come up with a realistic vision of how a low-carbon world in 2050 would look. Over 4,000 participants from Europe and beyond are expected at the three-day event. Commission President José Manuel Barroso will give the keynote speech at the closing session on 26 June, which will look ahead at prospects for the Copenhagen agreement.

    2009-06-24 - Fighting Cancer: A European partnership is born

    Today, the European Commission reinforces its long-term commitment to the fight against cancer by creating a European Partnership for Action against Cancer. The partnership will focus on actions that can be taken at EU level to more effectively prevent and control cancer across Europe. In Europe, one in three people will develop cancer in their lifetime. This translates to 3.2 million people being diagnosed with the disease every year. Cancer is not equally distributed in Europe and the chances of surviving cancer differ greatly between countries. By bringing together all relevant organisations working on cancer, the intention is to identify gaps, address needs and learn from each other.

    2009-06-10 - New rules on state aid to ship management companies

    The European Commission provided today new and detailed guidance on state aid granted to ship management companies. These rules complement the 2004 guidelines on state aid to maritime transport. Under the guidance adopted today, the tonnage tax may be applied to all ship managers, as long as they contribute to the development of the European maritime cluster and, more importantly, that they make a commitment to implement the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 ahead of its entry into force.

    The European Union has today set an important step towards developing a North-South rail freight axis using the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The Ministers of Transport from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria and Italy signed, in presence of the European Commission's Vice-President in charge of Transport Antonio Tajani, a letter of intent settling long term development objectives for the rail freight corridor "Stockholm – Copenhagen – Hamburg –Munich – Innsbruck - Verona –Naples".

    2009-06-12 - SESAR injects €1.9 billion into ATM research to avert congestion of European sky

    The SESAR Joint Undertaking, a unique public-private partnership in air traffic management (ATM) research and development founded by the European Commission and EUROCONTROL, signed 16 contracts totalling €1.9 billion today, for the creation of Europe’s future ATM system. These contracts mark the beginning of the execution of the SESAR programme. As it serves its vital long term objective – ensuring the sustainability of European air transport – the SESAR JU is also providing continued support for the ATM sector in the short term.

    A reflection process launched by the European Commission, involving stakeholders and transport experts, identified 6 main trends and challenges that will shape the future of transport policy over the coming decades – aging, migration and internal mobility, environmental challenges, the availability of energy resources, urbanisation and globalisation. This demonstrates the need to focus future European transport policy on the pursuit of an integrated, technology-based and user-friendly transport system. With today's adoption of the Communication on the future of transport   1  , the European Commission wants to stimulate further debate that aims at identifying concrete policy proposals for its next Transport White Paper scheduled for 2010.

    2009-06-22 - Commission welcomes adoption of feed regulation that will further strengthen food safety in the EU

    Farmers and pet owners will soon get better information on the feed they buy, a step that will further strengthen food safety in the EU, after the Council of Agriculture Ministers adopted today a regulation replacing the current legislation on marketing and the use of feed. The new legislation, based on a Commission proposal from 2008, considerably simplifies the existing procedures and it will help promote innovation and competitiveness in the European feed sector. It is also expected to lead to a more integrated single market for feed by reducing the administrative burden for feed operators. The regulation was endorsed by the European Parliament on February 5 and is expected to enter into force later this year.

    2009-06-02 - Commission's study finds out that European 20% renewables target can give jobs to 2.8 million people

    Reaching the 2020 renewable energy targets is expected to lead to around 2.8 million jobs in the renewable energy sector and generate a total value added of around 1.1% of GDP. This is the main conclusion of a European Commission's study on the impact of renewable energy policy on economic growth and employment in the European Union (Employ-RES) which is available in the internet from today. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said: "This shows that benefits of renewables in terms of security of supply and fighting climate change can go hand in hand with economic benefits".

    2009-06-17 - Energy Star: Commission and the US reinforce the energy efficiency standards for office equipment

    The European Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency have agreed today to make new ambitious specifications for computers, copiers and printers under the EU-US Energy Star Programme. The new criteria are effective from 1 July, and are expected to trigger 22 TWh electricity savings during the next four to six years in the EU which is comparable to the annual electrictiy consumption of Ireland. ENERGY STAR is part of the EU's strategy to better manage energy demand, contribute to security of energy supply and mitigate climate change.

    2009-06-25 - Commission acts to ensure effective and competitive energy market across Europe

    The Commission has taken firm action today against 25 Member States who prevent European consumers benefiting from the advantages of a competitive and open Energy Market by not complying with EU legislation. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom will be receiving letters of formal notice for not complying with applicable gas and electricity regulations. The Commission has also sent letters of formal notice to Greece, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Lithuania for maintaining a system of regulated prices in violation of the EU directives on electricity and gas.

    2009-06-24 - Simplification of fisheries rule is a success – and must continue!

    The Commission yesterday presented to Council its Communication on the implementation of the 2006-08 Action Plan for simplifying and improving the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). This report summarises the progress made during this period, and outlines how the Commission intends to continue working towards better and simpler fisheries legislation in future. The results achieved so far are encouraging: all the initiatives laid down in the 2006-08 Action Plan were completed. Fisheries legislation has become clearer, and its implementation costs both for administrations and for operators have been reduced. The report also highlights the use of impact assessments as a valuable tool for fine-tuning new legislation in advance.

    The European Commission, on behalf of the European Union, will today welcome representatives to the opening of the Second Joint Meeting of the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) in San Sebastian, Spain. The meeting, which follows on from the first such event held in Kobe, Japan, in 2007, will run until 3 July. Objectives for the five days include a review of the actions agreed in Kobe, a workshop on reducing overcapacity in the global tuna fleet, and the agreement of a new plan of action for the next two years.
